What's
the difference between career coaching and consulting? |
Imagine being
excited about going to work instead of dreading Monday
morning. It's possible with Career
Journeys.
Is this psychotherapy?
No. Counseling and
psychotherapy are processes of healing deep emotional conflicts
and issues. I am not a therapist, nor do I use any
psychotherapy techniques. Often, if a client needs
psychotherapy, they work with me in conjunction with a therapist
to address psychological issues, depression, or anxiety that can
impair their ability to move forward in their career.
Why can't I find a new job or explore my
career options by myself?
Many clients tell me they have
read all the national bestselling career books on their own and
taken vocational assessments, but still can't find career
direction or the meaningful changes they're seeking.
When making significant
changes, people often have to face their fears and insecurities.
Coaching is a positive and energizing experience which allows
someone to step away from rooted, inhibiting beliefs that
interfere with career advancement. I'm your sounding board
and co-strategist in finding realistic solutions, so you can
overcome obstacles, avoid frustration and preserve motivation.
Although books can offer
tremendous insight and knowledge, learning is not
a spectator sport, but an active process that
requires continuous dialogue and practice. I help you
practice and master the personal or business skills you need to
turn your ideas into reality. Self-confidence
and preparation will differentiate you from the competition.
Why should I invest the
time and money to hire a career coach?
Do you think Carl Sagan got up
on Monday morning and dreaded going to the office to study
another one of those billions, upon billions, upon billions of
stars? Probably not.
A job is just a paycheck at
the end of the week, even if it is an important, respected, well
paid position at a top firm with many perks. However, someone engaged in their life's work is not only
energized on Monday morning, but experiences the peace of mind
that comes from knowing they are doing something that truly
reflects who they were meant to be.
Of course there are times of
stress, but those living with purpose have the natural inner
motivators to stay committed, finish the project and continue
doing the work they love. The times of stress are much
more manageable and less upsetting.
What is your career
coaching process?
First we talk on the phone at
no charge to you. Because my services are based on personal
attention and follow-up, it's important that we develop
rapport and get to know each other. Once I have answered
your questions and you feel comfortable working with me and the
program I use, we have regular custom-tailored sessions.
Distance career
coaching involves email and phone sessions, or if you live in
Seattle, we can schedule to meet at my office. This
process takes most people 5 to 7 sessions, where sessions last
60 minutes. On-going coaching is available on a bi-monthly basis.
What vocational
assessments do you offer?
Yes, I offer the Myers-Briggs®
Personality Type Indicator, the Strong Interest Inventory®,
and the COPS/COPES interest clusters and work values assessment.
Many clients tell me that they
have taken these assessments in the past but did not get enough
practical information from them. I'm fully qualified to give
interpretations of these assessments, but more importantly, my scientific
background and understanding of statistics allows me to
accurately explain how your results can be directly applied to
your current career circumstances.
There
are many vocational assessments on the web, what's the
difference?
The Strong Interest Inventory® instrument has over 70 years
of research on its construction, reliability, and validity.
The Myers-Briggs® has over 50 years of research behind it.
This level of accuracy cannot be found in other online
assessments.
Because this is a psychological instrument, the publisher (
www.cpp-db.com ) require
that every administration include an interpretation session
with a qualified professional. I am qualified
by the publisher to interpret your results and explain how
they can be used during your current career search.
You can complete the
Myers-Briggs® or Strong
Interest® in 20 minutes from any computer at any time.
If you
have taken these assessments in the past, you can schedule an
interpretation session where we re-visit your
results in light of your current career search.
What's the difference between career coaching and
consulting?
Career
consultants deliver explicit advice independent of your
personality or interests based on their professional
experience. For example, if your current career aspiration
is to become president of your college, then you should hire
a consultant who specializes in college president campaigns.
They will give you direct directions about what to wear or
say.
Quality
career coaches will never tell you what to do, but are able
to assist you in achieving your goals by looking at the
situation from your perspective and desires.
They
discuss alternative choices with you, help you overcome
obstacles and keep you focused, however, your interests
and values guide the process of implementing workable
solutions from start to finish.
Flexibility
is crucial in coaching so you are doing the activities that
genuinely resonate with you.
